This year, I am afforded the opportunity to serve as your President and to represent the student body to the best of my ability. I started as a shy first-year on a Cabinet committee, unaware that my perspectives and passions had the power to engender positive change. In so many instances of my life, I have been disregarded or silenced simply because of who I am. If anything, I hope that my continued presence within the SGA, coupled with the fact that my entire Middlebury career will have been marked by women of color Presidents, proves that we are just as capable, and that we are as essential to the process of shaping this campus for the better.
In my view, the role of the President is one of guidance and support— of enabling senators, committee members, and the student body to pursue solutions to the issues we all care about. I firmly believe that student mobilization is an effective medium for change, and that the SGA is one of the pathways of such constructive student activism. This is reflected in the tireless work the Senate and the various committees put into programming and bills so as to make Middlebury a more comfortable space for all students— a place we can all call home. We certainly have a long way to go, but I strongly feel that there is no better way to enact change than to be a part of it.
