ONGOING SGA INITIATIVES
S2021-SB11: Allocating $100,000 of the Student Activities Fee Reserves to the Seizing Opportunities Fund due to COVID-19
The SGA Executive Council and SGA Directors of Finance have allocated another $100,000 of the Student Activities Fund reserves in response to COVID-19 and the ongoing financial hardships exacerbated by the pandemic. Students can access the Student Emergency for financial assistance for this summer with expenses related to technology access, travel, housing, food, and more. Information on how to access the Seizing Opportunities was emailed by the Dean of Students, reaching students in the two highest tiers of financial need on campus. Please check your inbox with a message from the Dean of Students from approximately a week ago. If you have any questions, please contact Chief Diversity Officer Miguel Fernandez or Dean of Students Derek Doucet with any questions.

S2021-SB10: Establishing an Intersectional and Multi-Constituent Committee to Recommend a Social Honor Code Supporting Community Standards
In response to a recent incident of potential racial bias that occurred on Saturday, May 8, the SGA passed S2021-SB10 at our meeting on Sunday. The bill calls for the creation of an ad-hoc committee—composed primarily of members of the student body—to work collaboratively with campus partners to formulate a Social Honor Code recommendation that addresses our shared values and how we can ensure all members of our community are both included and protected. This will then be given to the Community Council next year as a recommendation for implementation. The resolution was written by SGA Junior Senator Myles Maxie ‘22. Next steps to get involved will be released in the coming weeks.

National Mental Health Action Day
May 20th is National Mental Health Action Day! The SGA Health and Wellness Committee is partnering with MTV’s coalition for Mental Health to take action for our collective wellbeing. Colleges and organizations across the country will activate on May 20th with the goal of empowering individuals and communities to prioritize mental health. The Health and Wellness Committee has coordinated a variety of events and ways to participate on Thursday. Visit go/MHAD/ to see the full list of events.

COMMUNITY PARTNER ANNOUNCEMENTS
Campus Hunger Project Survey
The Campus Hunger Project (CHP) is a national movement working to eliminate food insecurity on college campuses across the country. The goal of this survey is to assess the extent of food insecurity among Middlebury students during semesters and breaks. There is little current data on the topic at Middlebury College, which has made it difficult for MiddCHP to properly evaluate and advocate for students’ food needs. The questionnaire has been designed so that results will be comparable to the official Department of Agriculture findings. With these results, we plan to work with faculty and students to organize and build food resources for students. Click here to access the survey.

Energy2028 Steering Committee
Two Student Reps are needed for the Energy2028 Steering Committee! Two student seats are available—a one-year term position (Sept 2021-May 2022) and a two-year term position (Sept 2021-May 2023). Apply or nominate a peer by creating a one-page letter stating why you, or the person you are nominating, would be a good choice for this role. The deadline to apply is May 20, 2021. Send applications and nominations to Jack Byrne, Dean of Sustainability and Environmental Affairs, at jmbyrne@middlebury.edu.

The Twilight Project is an ongoing initiative that seeks to bring some of Middlebury's problematic truths to light. One subgroup of the project is looking at how architecture and the design of spaces around us reinforces gender roles and white supremacy and impacts our wellbeing. The researchers for the initiative, Ella Houlihan '21 and Cheryl Engmann '22, are asking for students to share their experiences with different spaces around campus in order to advise the administration as they make renovations and begin plans for new buildings. The questionnaire at go/TwilightArchitecture/ should take 30 minutes to an hour to complete, and all participants will be paid $15 upon completion of the form. All questionnaires must be completed by Friday, May 7.

The SGA Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee is currently working to expand the Decolonizing the Curriculum initiative begun several years ago by Wengel Kifle ‘20 and Middlebury alum Treasure Brooks ‘21. The Decolonizing the Curriculum initiative aims to diversify the scope of authorship in Middlebury College syllabi and create more inclusive learning environments for all students. As a committee, continuing this work is one of our main priorities and conversations are currently underway with both the Chinese and Italian departments. If you have specific thoughts on your own department’s curriculum, or if you’re interested in collaborating, we would love to talk to you. Please reach out to Madison Holland ‘21 (mholland@middlebury.edu) or Miguel Velasquez ‘23 (mvelasquez@middlebury.edu) for more info.

SGA Relationship and Sexual Respect Committee: Safer Sex Supplies Access
SGA Directors of Relationship & Sexual Respect Aubrianna Wilson ‘23 and Melanie Chow ‘22 are working with Dining Services, Parton, and the Health & Wellness Education Office to hopefully make safer sex supplies more accessible through vending machines. The RSR committee is also working on a collaboration with Verbal Onslaught to organize an upcoming event centered around celebrating pleasure and uplifting sexual exploration and intimacy. Finally, the Title IX and Sexual Violence panel is still postponed until further notice in order for key administrators to attend.

SGA Innovation and Technology Committee: MiddHacks
MiddHacks will be Middlebury College’s very first annual hackathon hosted by the SGA Innovation & Technology Committee virtually on April 24-25, 2021. Registration has been extended to Thursday April 22, 2021! A hackathon is an invention marathon where programmers, designers and builders all come together to learn, build and share their creations. The 24-hour event is for anyone with an interest in technology and who is eager to develop some technical, design-thinking, and cross-collaboration skills either by attending workshops, building a project, or both. Students can choose to work in teams of 3-5 to create a technical project related to one of the three following themes: Supporting Vermont Innovation & Non-Profits, Technology to Overcome a Global Pandemic, and Envisioning Equity and Community. We’ll also have workshops, networking opportunities, prizes, games and more available for anyone. Don’t have a team, or even an idea? Don’t worry you can still sign up! We’ll give you the tools to build something incredible and help you find a team. Have any other questions or want to sign up? Visit go/middhacks/!

  • Observe all recommended COVID-19 travel protocols.
  • This ride sharing plan is acceptable given the apparent low prevalence of the virus in the student community at the moment. This could change at any time however, so watch for follow-up announcements from college officials.

SGA Updates: Academic Policies, Student Organization Funding, SGA Elections, and more

Sunday, March 14, 2021
Dear Students,

We hope that you are settling into the new semester well. Here are some SGA updates that we would like to share with you.

We want to acknowledge the actions taken against Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and their work. SGA executives have been in close contact with key stakeholders, and we hope to provide a follow-up soon.

ORGANIZATIONAL UPDATES
SGA General Assembly Meeting
Join us at go/GeneralAssembly/ on March 28 for the next General Assembly meeting! There is designated time every meeting for students to share their ideas and concerns. If individuals or group of students would like to present to the SGA General Assembly on a project or initiative, please contact SGA Speaker of the General Assembly Melisa Gurkan ‘23.5 at mgurkan@middlebury.edu by Friday at 12:00 PM EST prior to the upcoming meeting, and you will be included on the General Assembly Agenda.

Student Organization Funding
Due to prolonged restrictions on student organizations’ programming brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been increased demand for redistributions of funds within student orgs’ approved budgets. As a result, the SGAFC has developed a Reallocation of Funds Request Form (RFR) linked on our website (go/SGAFC/). If your organization has previously allocated line items for events that are no longer happening this spring, your organization can fill out a RFR form to reallocate funds. Send a completed RFR form with a brief description and rationale for each line item to sgafc@middlebury.edu for approval. The spring annual budgeting process for the 2021-2022 academic school year (FY22) will take place on Sunday April 11 and Sunday April 18. Student organization leaders can sign their organization up for a meeting here. Annual budgeting meetings will occur via Zoom. Reach to sgafc@middlebury.edu with any questions. NOTE: if your organization is within the Middlebury Intercultural Leaders Coalition (MILC), the Religious Life Cluster (RLC), or the Service Cluster Board (SCB), please do NOT sign up for a meeting. Instead, please coordinate with your cluster leaders.

Spring 2021 Feb Senator Election and Junior Senator Special Election
This week the SGA will hold elections for two new Feb Senators and a Junior Senator to join the SGA Student Senate to meet with the General Assembly. Polling will open at go/vote/ on Thursday, March 18 at 12:00 PM for Juniors (Class of 2022) and all Febs. Look out for more information about the candidates via email and the SGA website later this week.

ONGOING SGA INITIATIVES
Replacing the Pass/D/Fail Grading Option with the Current Credit/No-Credit Grading Option
SGA Vice-President Roni Lezama ‘22 and Directors of Academic Affairs Kenzo Okazaki ‘21 and Priya Kaur ‘22 have been in close conversation with the Educational Affairs Committee to try and adopt more equitable academic policies. The SGA this weekend passed a resolution in support of replacing the P/D/F grading policy with a more equitable Credit/No Credit system. Roni, Kenzo, and Priya will continue to push the EAC to present faculty with new academic policies that benefit students. Ultimately, this academic policy change would be decided by the faculty through a vote. You can read the history and rationale for pursuing Credit/No Credit as the permanent academic policy in this resolution.

Polling for Academic Policies
The SGA Academic Affairs Committee was approached by Middlebury’s Educational Affairs Committee about a tentative and hypothetical proposal to change Middlebury’s credit policy. If enacted in its present form, the policy would make it possible for professors to create classes that would count for a half-credit and meet for half of the time. This could be either as a class that meets half the semester or a class that meets fewer times during the semester. These may include language refresher courses, music lessons, etc. Another independent aspect of the proposal would be the ability for the Curriculum Committee to approve certain 100 level courses that meet for 5 hours a week to merit an awarded credit of greater than one. The proposal suggests that this would reward students for the hard work they do in intro classes including developing extra skills they may not have had going into the class. It would also lessen their course load in later semesters. These two policies can be independently implemented, and we are polling the SGA and hoping to get student feedback on one or both of these issues.

Reslife Training
Back in December, the SGA First-Year Senators Meg Farley and Karina Martir worked with fellow first-year students Lu Mila ‘24 and Marlow Saucier ‘24, SGA Vice President Roni Lezama ‘22, the Associate Dean of Students for Residential Life AJ Place, and Assistant Director of Residential Life Kady Shea to address the lack of support for transgender and gender non-conforming first-year students. They were able to make essential edits to the housing application to clarify Middlebury’s goal of inclusivity for all students, and these changes will positively impact current and future Middlebury students. They later passed their first bill which aims to implement ResLife training in support of transgender and gender nonconforming students in collaboration with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director Renee Wells.

Dear Students,

With midterms wrapping up and Halloween on the horizon, there are so many exciting things to come! Be sure to find time to have fun and take care of yourself. Here are some SGA updates on what we have in store.

ORGANIZATIONAL UPDATES
SGA General Assembly Meeting

ONGOING SGA INITIATIVES
Reducing Student Workloads
In the last two weeks, members of the SGA had several meetings with the Faculty Council, the Academic Department Chairs, and the Senior Leadership Group to discuss students’ workloads and wellbeing after hearing lots of concerning feedback from our peers. After hearing from SGA President John Schurer ‘21, SGA Vice Presidents Sophia Lundberg ‘21.5 and Roni Lezama ‘22, SGA Directors of Academic Affairs Priya Kaur ‘22 and Kenzo Okazaki ‘21, SGA Junior Senator Mariana Tahiri ‘22, and Co-Chair of Community Council Christian Kummer ‘22, the Faculty Council urged the entire Faculty to make changes to their syllabi and workload expectations for the remainder of the semester, as you can read in this email sent on Monday, October 19. We encourage all students to continue advocating for themselves and their peers to professors, deans, and other support systems on campus.

First-Year Remote Peer Mentors
After SGA Director of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Francoise Niyigena ‘21 initiated conversations about support mechanisms for remote students, a new staff position has been created: Student Life Advisor for Remote Learners. Professor Jessica Holmes was appointed to this position and has worked hard to last our proposal come into fruition. She has secured funding and has posted several positions open to any student who is eligible to work on campus and is interested in being a peer mentor for remote students. First-Year Peer Mentors (FYPMs) at Middlebury College serve as mentors to first-years who are studying remotely. Specifically, they are expected to build community and foster the intellectual and personal development of first-year students. They serve as a bridge that connects students to available resources on campus. FYPMs forge personal connections with their students and communicate any student issues with the Student Life Advisor for Remote Learners.

Connective Platform for Change-Making
Do you feel like there must be a better way for organizations across campus to talk to each other? So do we! The SGA Environmental Sustainability Committee is developing a connective platform—like a mutual aid spreadsheet for organizations but with even more perks. To make this work, though, we need your feedback! Fill out this form, or contact SGA Directors of Environmental Sustainability Connor Wertz ‘22 and Haley Goodman ‘21 with any questions at cwertz@middlebury.edu and hgoodman@middlebury.edu.

COMMUNITY PARTNER ANNOUNCEMENTS
Waste at the Dining Halls
This past week, representatives from the Sustainability Solutions Lab met with Dining Services and the Facilities Services Office to discuss how to reduce our food and plastic waste. In a typical semester, we have staff sorting our waste streams, but this is no longer an option with our COVID-19 reality. Here is what you can do to help:
  • Return your reusable container to the dining hall. This is critical! If containers are not returned to Dining Services, we will have to switch back to disposable containers.
  • Bring your own reusable cutlery and beverage containers!
  • Sort your compost and recycling correctly. Only put food waste in the compost. Any “mixed” bag will be thrown in the trash.
  • Soon, you will see posters guiding us towards how to take care of our waste. Let’s keep Middlebury sustainable!

JusTalks First-Year Workshops

They want to offer the first workshops of the year to first-years in order to talk about race, racism, white supremacy, and other related topics. Workshops cover a range of topics and anyone from the first-year class will be able to participate, regardless of content knowledge or experience. They hope you will come to learn from each other and that these conversations happen not just at these workshops, but also in everyday life. Contact justalks@middlebury.edu for any questions, comments, or concerns. For workshop descriptions and the registration form, visit go/JusTalksRegister/. Some upcoming workshops include “Uprooting White Supremacy in Ourselves,” “Black Bodies as Entertainment,” “Interracial Friendships,” and “Racial Microaggressions,” which are happening from Sunday, October 25 to Thursday, October 29.

SGA Directors of External Affairs Henry Ganey ‘22 and Daniel Gutierrez ‘23 and SGA Vice President Roni Lezama ‘22 are drafting a proposal to find ways to support the local businesses in town by expanding Middlebury Money, a program already established by the Better Middlebury Partnership. The goal is to enable students to spend their declining balance at local establishments in addition to on-campus retail locations like The Grille and MiddXpress. We want students to take advantage of what the Town of Middlebury has to offer while continuing to stimulate the local economy.

Textbook Accessibility
SGA Sophomore Senator Khasai Makhulo ‘23 is beginning a project with the SGA Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee and the SGA Academic Affairs Committee to make textbooks more affordable and accessible for students. COMMUNITY PARTNER ANNOUNCEMENTS
MoveMidd Challenge
The Office of Advancement will be hosting its MoveMidd Challenge fundraiser on September 30 and October 1 to raise money for financial aid among the community—parents, students, faculty, and alumni. The goal is to receive 1,800 donations (of any size) in two days. If this goal is met, the College’s trustees will contribute an additional $220,000 to Middlebury’s financial aid budget. See their vision in action with this video and help raise awareness on social media!

Speak About It
In October, the Civil Rights & Title IX Office and the Office of Health & Wellness Education are partnering to present Speak About It: a consent education, sexual violence prevention, and healthy relationships training that uses true storytelling and live performance to capture what healthy relationships and sex can and should look like. The hour-long show (presented virtually) uses real stories written by real young people in order to engage students in conversations about consent, dating, sex, identity, alcohol, bystander intervention, sexual assault, and more. After the show, Speak About It’s professional sex and relationship educators (many of whom are still students themselves) will partner with trained Middlebury student facilitators to lead small group discussions to allow participants to debrief and engage directly with their peers on these issues. After the performance, professional facilitators working with trained student co-facilitators will host small group discussions to allow students to debrief and engage directly with their peers on the issues. We are looking for up to 20 student volunteers to help lead these discussion sessions. Facilitator training will be provided in advance. All that’s required is an interest in promoting healthy relationships and building a culture of consent on campus, and a willingness to lean in to these conversations. If you are interested in facilitating a session, please sign up at go/SpeakAboutIt/ or contact Middlebury’s Civil Rights & Title IX Coordinator Marti McCaleb at mmcaleb@middlebury.edu for more information.

SGA Updates: General Assembly Meetings, Credit/No-Credit, Midd Xpress Pregnancy Tests, & More!

Saturday, September 12, 2020
Dear Students,

We hope that this finds you at the end of a successful first week of classes. To increase engagement and transparency with the student body, the Middlebury Student Government Association (SGA) will be sending out periodic newsletters throughout the academic year!

ORGANIZATIONAL UPDATES
General Assembly Meetings
The SGA has a new meeting structure this year! SGA Vice President Roni Lezama ‘22 suggested that the SGA meet as a full General Assembly to encourage collaboration and communication between the Presidential Cabinet and the Student Senate. The SGA General Assembly will meet every Sunday from 3:00-5:00 PM to share updates, discuss campus-wide issues, and vote on legislation. There is designated time every meeting for students to share their ideas. Please check out our meeting agenda for this Sunday, September 13, and join us via Zoom during Phase 1!

ONGOING SGA INITIATIVES
Our Directors and Senators have already started working on projects and initiatives to support the student body. Connect with them at any time to find out more information!

Credit/No-Credit Option for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021
The SGA Directors of Academic Affairs Priya Kaur ‘22 and Kenzo Okazaki ‘21 reached out to Dean of Curriculum Suzanne Gurland and Dean of Faculty Sujata Moorti to give students more flexibility in responding to inequities caused by COVID-19. As a result, in both semesters of Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, students will have the option to take one Credit/No-Credit course. This semester, Credit/No-Credit courses may count towards requirements, and credit usage does not deduct from the 5 non-standard grading courses that students are normally allotted. Each student will have until the last day of regularly scheduled classes of each semester to invoke the credit/no-credit grading. SGA Vice President Roni Lezama ‘22 and SGA President John Schurer ‘21 were also involved in drafting the proposal.

Pregnancy Tests at Midd Xpress
The SGA Directors of Relationship & Sexual Respect Melanie Chow ‘22 and Aubrianna Wilson ‘23 have made pregnancy tests available in MiddXpress. They were concerned that students may not feel comfortable going to the Center for Health & Wellness during COVID-19, and should not have to go into the Town of Middlebury. Although Plan B cannot be sold without a healthcare professional in Midd Xpress, it is still available at a discounted rate at the Center for Health & Wellness!

Access to FYCs for Remote Students
The SGA Directors of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Francoise Niyigena ‘21 and Madison Holland ‘21, and the SGA Student Affairs Committee are advocating for a peer support program for remote first-year students. Currently, the only support systems available to remote first-years are Deans and First-Year Seminar Advisors, but students often don’t feel comfortable going to staff right away. A more informal peer support system is crucial to make first-years feel included in the college community. The team sent a formal proposal to Kristy Carpenter and AJ Place from Residential Life and is excited to continue to work on this initiative.

Face Covering Cleaning
SGA Directors of Health and Wellness Eloise Berdahl-Baldwin ‘21.5 and Natalie Meyer ‘21 recently wrote an article for the Health and Wellness Campus Well Newsletter detailing how to clean and take care of your face coverings. Check out the article here!

Installations of Water Bottle Refilling Fountains
SGA Sophomore Senator Miguel Sanchez-Tortoledo ‘23 collaborated with the Facilities Services Office to install water bottle fountains in first-year dorms, dining halls, and Munroe Hall. More fountains will be installed in academic buildings and other residential halls this winter break.

Food Resources Guide
This guide, go/FoodResources/, consolidates resources for Middlebury students who are having difficulty accessing enough food. It includes on campus points of contact, off-campus organizations, and other Addison County and Vermont resources. Thanks to Molly Babbin ‘22 and Melanie Leider ‘23, and all the other current and former students involved, for organizing this initiative.

Food insecurity rates in the United States have doubled due to the pandemic, and 3 out of 5 college students are now basic-needs insecure. At Middlebury, a survey conducted last year found that 9.7% of respondents “sometimes” or “often” did not have enough food when classes were in session. While more research must be done to figure out the reasons behind this statistic, it is important that all students know that resources exist. If you have any questions, suggestions, or additions to this guide, or if you want to share an anonymous concern about food access, visit go/FoodFeedback/.
